Navigating ADHD with Courage, Curiosity, Creativity, and Compassion ✶

Changing what it means to live with ADHD by changing the stories we tell ourselves.

The Canadian Medical System is in a crisis. 25 years ago your primary care provider was in the driver’s seat of your health and healthcare. But today, upwards of 20% of PEI residents do not have a family doctor, and those that do are finding services reduced. The patient (you) is now in the driver’s seat of your health and health services. A patient that is often overwhelmed, confused, scared, and sick.

I can’t ever drive your car. But around the region of ADHD & Neurodiversity in PEI / Canada, I can act as a supportive person in the passenger’s seat with a map through coaching. Some people don’t want a partner on the trip, but still need direction. If this is you, you can think of me as a person in the gas station where you stop and ask for directions.  I can also provide some guided tours through my intensive 8 Week ADHD Management Bootcamp, where you can learn about the whole region in a friendly environment with others who are on the same journey.

About Me

My name is Sandy Slade and I live with ADHD. I am an entrepreneur based out of Prince Edward Island, and the founder of the community support group ADHD PEI. In a former life working as a Learning Strategist, I worked directly with individuals with ADHD and learning disabilities. Many clients mentioned that they found my style of support helpful. It was that experience combined with my knowledge of the ADHD ecosystem through which I discovered gaps in services that I believe I am uniquely qualified to fill.

Through Restart ADHD I am focused on helping individuals and groups with goal setting, habit formation, accountability, and the development of life skills. I will assist in the development of ADHD management strategies, as well as provide guidance to publicly available resources that are helpful for diagnosis, treatment, and management.

Services

  • Goal Setting, Creating an Action Plan, Accountability, Strategies and Personalized ADHD Support tailored to your needs as an individual wanting help with managing a part of their ADHD.

  • 1 on 1 meetings to discuss resources, products, and services that will best serve your unique needs. This may include resource lists, information, referral support, or advocacy.

This is different from coaching as I am not doing the work with you, but directing you to supports and empowering you to write your own story.

  • A short course for adults who are recently diagnosed, struggling, or looking for support in Personal ADHD Management. Students with an ADHD diagnosis in their last year of high school who are going to be transitioning to University are also welcome.

This 8 week group-based personal ADHD Management Bootcamp provides you with evidence based strategies and unique framework and mindsets that have I have developed to manage my own ADHD.

My Approach

Courage

Courage is the foundation of successful change because change is scary. It is scary to admit you need help. It is scary to start medication. It is scary to change medication. It is scary to admit that we can't do it all ourselves and need help. Courage is feeling the fear and still taking the step. It is stepping out in faith that you can be successful despite the possibility of failure.

Curiosity

Curiosity allows us to keep learning and growing. It is difficult to be judgmental and curious at the same time. Judgement comes from a place of stability and knowing the answer, where curiosity is seeking out answers, causes, and understanding. By taking a mindset of curiosity, it engages the novelty and interest that is so important to the ADHD brain. It helps us see the world better.

Compassion

Many people I work with are burned out by fueling themselves through self hatred, shame, and trying to escape a core belief that they are unworthy or lack value. Self-compassion can feel like making excuses to these individuals. They may also feel like they will lose their edge or their drive. Self-compassion is not saying that all your behaviour is ok. It is providing to yourself the love, positive regard, and empathy that you provide to others. It is self-soothing and reminding that your worth and value are not found in your behavior. It is the act of being your own best friend. So that you can work and live with more positivity which allows you to be unburdened by toxic guilt and shame.

Creativity

Creativity and out of the box solutions are something people with ADHD often excel in. Creativity engages our imagination, lateral thinking, and making connections. It is important to navigating ADHD as the organization systems other people use may not work for people with ADHD and creating new systems that will work for them will require creativity.
